Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Devault, PA. For those needing a hair or alcohol test, we're experts in hair assessments, with centers across all U.S. cities prepared to conduct hair testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. These tests are suitable for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has seen an increase in use. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. This method is favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal bodies, and individuals under probation. The key advantage of such tests lies in their ability to detect drug use over an extended period, around 90 days, making it hard to evade. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most proficient for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and other drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair samples can reveal drug and alcohol use over a period of up to 90 days. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, a perfect quantity for both screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG, add-ons, and beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, only scalp hair is meant. Body hair encompasses all other categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This step involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry that an electronic chain of custody system does not provide.

Screening acts as an initial rapid evaluation for drug use. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screening result must be validated for legal acceptability. Any samples that test preliminarily positive during Screening call for a secondary confirmation.

When a sample tests preliminarily positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction preparation. During this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory workflow from Accessioning through to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conformance to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug usage up to 90 days prior, whereas urine tests feature a limited detection timeline.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is notably difficult to mask a hair drug test, leading to higher accuracy in results.
  • Reveals usage trends: It can trace patterns of drug use over a duration, not just recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs typically require around 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Variation in findings: Variables such as hair color and personal growth differences can influence the presence of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
