Accredited Drug Testing offers full-service hair follicle testing in Falls Creek, Pennsylvania. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, we're experts in hair testing with facilities in every major city Nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body can be used. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become more common for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often require hair tests over urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation cases. The major advantage of hair tests is their ability to detect drug use over 90 days with observed collection and high resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain preferable for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly acknowledged as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug use. Hair captures a lengthy record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Its collection is straightforward, making it hard to tamper with and easy to send.

A sample that is 1.5 inches comprising about 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" pertains solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails initially processing a sample within a lab’s system. This process confirms proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry that might not be included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly method for ruling out drug use in many cases, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal acceptance. Any samples tentatively positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample prove tentatively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are withdrawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other tests (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging to execute.

Confirming a positive screening result employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples deemed presumptively positive are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can discover drug use over 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are highly reliable as they are very difficult to falsify.
  • Provides historical data: They can reveal a drug use pattern over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detecting drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are usually costlier compared to other testing options.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually targets the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Falls Creek, PA, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests through its unparalleled detection accuracy. With a detection window of up to 90 days, hair tests provide a broader view of substance usage. Urine tests, albeit effective for recent use, cannot match the reliability offered by hair screening.
This reliability is especially vital in strict workplace environments demanding thorough substance evaluations.

Extended Detection Window

Offering a glimpse into an individual's long-term substance use, hair follicle tests boast an impressive 90-day detection window. This extended period grants employers in Falls Creek, PA, a detailed view of an applicant's or employee's history, exceeding the typical short-term snapshot provided by urine tests. This comprehensive approach is invaluable for maintaining a drug-free workplace with confidence in the hiring process.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Falls Creek, PA, significantly hinders potential tampering, ensuring the integrity of the test results. Unlike urine samples, which can be diluted or substituted, hair tests offer a robust shield against adulteration. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
