Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Fox Chase, Pennsylvania. For those needing drug or alcohol testing via hair samples, our specialty centers nationwide, including all cities, are equipped to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Our hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now often opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, along with courts and probation systems, rely on hair testing. This method's key advantage is its long detection window of up to 90 days. Collected under observation, hair tests are nearly tamper-proof, yet urine tests remain the gold standard for identifying drug use within a recent 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluations are increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair strands encapsulate a prolonged record of substance consumption by trapping biomarkers within their fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair can present a detection timeframe of up to about three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximating the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise measuring the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable volume of body hair can be gathered. When referring to head hair, it indicates scalp hair alone. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in laboratory analysis of a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a specimen into the laboratory system. This process includes checking the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-friendly approach to ruling out drug consumption in most samples, any positive result requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a specimen tests tentatively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this process, drugs are removed from hair at concentrations significantly lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug tests are the most challenging to conduct.

Positive results from the Screening phase are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistant to falsification: Hair drug tests are hard to cheat, providing more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It enables the identification of drug use patterns over time, not solely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: It takes roughly 5-7 days before drugs are traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are generally costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: While frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", the procedure analyzes the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
