Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Foxburg, Pennsylvania. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in the field. We have testing centers across the nation capable of conducting hair tests. To qualify, you need 1.5-2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body, which can be used for analysis. These tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Employers, court systems, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary arrangements frequently utilize these tests. The major advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection period, typically up to 90 days, conducted under observation and difficult to manipulate. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-duration record for alcohol and substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the structure of the growing hair shaft. When obtained from the scalp area, a hair sample can indicate drug and alcohol presence over a period extending up to three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for transportation.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands, similar in thickness to a #2 pencil, provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or screenings involving more than 10 panels, it is suggested to collect 150mg. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. In cases where scalp hair isn't obtainable, a comparable sample of body hair may be gathered. When addressing head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four critical stages within the laboratory assessment of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the primary process of integrating the sample into a lab's system. This step involves checking the sealing and shipping integrity, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any other data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening acts as an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. Though cost-effective for excluding drug use in most cases, a positive result during Screening must be authenticated to be valid in a legal context. Any samples marked presumptive positive during Screening require further validation.

If a specimen shows a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is taken from the primary sample and processed for Extraction. In this phase, substances are separated from the hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva), which is why hair screening is among the most challenging methods to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo a washing process before Confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory pathway from Accessioning through to Confirmation is evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and pursuant to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests are able to reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a briefer detection timeframe.
  • High resistance to tampering: Hair tests are notably difficult to manipulate, thus enhancing result precision.
  • Offers historical usage patterns: It delivers insights into drug usage trends over longer periods, as opposed to only detecting recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate usage: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth rates may influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the actual procedure evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
