In Gap, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing provides all-inclusive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether requiring a hair analysis for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing stands out, with facilities available across every city nationwide for conducting these evaluations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. The tests analyze substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer customized options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has gained prominence as a drug testing method. It's favored by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. This preference arises from its longer detection window, almost 90 days, and the difficulty to falsify results. While it's ideal for catching long-term use scenarios, for recent drug use (within 5 days), urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken from near the scalp, hair can provide a detection window of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising approximately 200 strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg, which is optimal for preliminary and comprehensive testing. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10 types, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. The term head hair refers solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test in the laboratory consists of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample is first processed into the laboratory's system. This step verifies the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening phase involves a preliminary examination for substances of abuse. Screening serves as an economical method for ruling out drug use in the majority of samples, but a positive screen result must undergo confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that are potentially positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests potentially positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at a lower concentration compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), which contributes to hair drug screening's complexity.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples that are potentially positive are cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are very difficult to cheat, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Patterns of historical use: They provide insights into drug use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Ineffectiveness for recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests generally cost more than other testing options.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the evaluation examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Advantages of Hair Testing are notable compared to traditional urine tests in Gap, PA. Hair tests are lauded for their extended detection capabilities, enabling the identification of substance use over a longer period. This feature makes them a preferred choice for organizations aiming to maintain a drug-free environment. Additionally, they are less susceptible to tampering, unlike urine tests, offering more dependable results.

Superior Detection Accuracy further distinguishes hair testing. While urine tests are proficient in identifying recent use, hair testing provides a broader detection window, capturing a more comprehensive substance use history. This holistic view supports more informed decision-making for employers and authorities alike.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window is a defining advantage of hair follicle testing in Gap, PA. Unlike other testing methods, hair tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, offering a detailed account of an individual's substance history. This extended timeframe allows employers to gain a thorough understanding of an employee's or applicant's past drug use.

Comprehensive Substance History is crucial for employers making informed hiring or management decisions. The lengthy detection window serves as an invaluable tool for assessing long-term patterns of use, helping to ensure that safety and compliance standards are maintained in the workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Reduce Sample Adulteration with hair follicle tests in Gap, PA, known for their high resistance to tampering. Unlike other drug testing methodologies, hair tests are challenging to falsify, providing results that stakeholders can trust. This inherent reliability makes hair testing a favorable option for entities focused on integrity and accuracy.

Unquestionable Results are a byproduct of the tamper-resistance inherent in hair testing. Employers and legal authorities rely on the dependable nature of hair tests for their drug detection needs, confident that the findings are both truthful and accurate, thereby fortifying their drug-free policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
