In Harleysville, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analyses. For hair drug or alcohol tests, Accredited Drug Testing is a leading provider. We have facilities in every city across the nation and can conduct hair analyses. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for testing. Our hair evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other options.

Lately, hair follicle drug assessments have gained favor over traditional methods. A growing number of employers, courts, and professionals focused on substance abuse advocate for hair drug testing instead of routine urine tests. Organizations with non-tolerance stances on drug use, legal entities, and probation officers are increasingly implementing hair follicle tests due to their extensive drug use detection window of up to 90 days, the observed sample collection, and difficulty to falsify. However, for recent drug consumption, urine testing remains the precise option.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the strand's fibers during growth. When collected from near the scalp, hair offers up to around a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and other drugs. The sample is straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 strands (resembling the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is perfect for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analysis involving more than 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair may be gathered. When we mention head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. In contrast, body hair includes any other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four steps in processing a drug test result in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning signifies the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab's system. This encompasses verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial swift examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical means to exclude drug consumption for most samples, any positive results need confirmation before deemed court admissible. Samples that are presumptive positives in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lesser concentrations compared to other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening notably challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicated as presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the oversight of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair endorsement and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection time frame: Hair drug tests reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a briefer detection span.
  • Cheating obstacles: It is quite arduous to deceive hair drug tests, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Displays historical use: It projects a pattern of drug use over time, not only recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur a higher cost compared to other drug testing options.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
