Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Hasson Heights, Pennsylvania. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair testing and offer centers in every city across the country. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or body sections for testing. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle testing for drugs has gained prominence over more traditional methods. Employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair testing instead of the customary urine tests. Zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probationary situations use hair tests due to their extensive detection window of up to 90 days, their observed collection method, and their resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized for its effectiveness in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When samples are taken close to the scalp, they can reveal up to a tri-monthly detection timeline for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and uncomplicated to transport.

To obtain the optimal sample for analysis, a 1.5-inch length of around 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp is optimal, ensuring the collection of 100mg of hair. When conducting EtG, additional analyses, or tests exceeding 10 panels, it's advisable to use a sample size of 150mg. It's ideal to verify the sample weight using a jeweler’s scale. In instances where scalp hair is unavailable, a proportional amount of body hair may be utilized. Note that head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other varieties (like facial or axillary hair).

Procedure Overview

The primary stages in the lab analysis of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary stage where a sample is incorporated into the lab’s system. This process involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning it an arbitrary Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any outstanding data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody record.

Screening involves a rapid preliminary assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage for most specimens, a confirmed positive result is necessary before it's legally recognized. Any samples presumptively positive in Screening demand a subsequent confirmation.

When a sample exhibits a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), highlighting why hair drug tests are among the most intricate to conduct.

Confirming a positive screening finding is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Each presumptive positive specimen undergoes washing before the final confirmation process. This entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal substance usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that cover a shorter duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably difficult, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It offers a usage pattern over time, not limited to recent substance use.

Challenges:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Detecting drugs in hair generally takes 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing usually incurs higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair shade and personal hair growth rates may influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Though often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
