Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Morris, Pennsylvania. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, with facilities available nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair testing allows for the analysis of drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a popular choice for drug screening. Many employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts prefer this method over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, judiciary systems, and those on probation favor hair tests, offering a longer detection timeframe up to 90 days, closely monitored collection, and minimal chances for tampering. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can present up to roughly a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sampling of about 200 strands (roughly the dimensions of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent volume of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it pertains to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps within the laboratory procedure of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This encompasses verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening involves a preliminary quick assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be permissible in legal contexts. Any samples that yield a presumptive positive outcome in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The full laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It is exceedingly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
