Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in New Buffalo, Pennsylvania. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, with testing sites across every city Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary. These tests can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other specific hair testing needs.

In the past few years, the approach to drug testing has increasingly integrated hair follicle screenings. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts frequently mandate these over the usual urine tests. Hair follicle exams are preferred by zero-tolerance companies, courts, and probationary services due to their extended detection period, which can span to 90 days. These tests, observed during collection, are almost impossible to tamper with. Nevertheless, for identifying drug use within the prior 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol use. It offers a prolonged history of substance consumption by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use over a detection window of up to roughly three months. It is easy to acquire, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch section comprising approximately 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the standard sample size for analysis and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Measurement on a jeweler’s scale is recommended. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equal portion of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation are the core phases in the laboratory handling of a drug test result.

Accessioning entails the introductory processing of a sample into the laboratory's system. It confirms that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, any positive result must be confirmed to be valid in legal settings. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be deemed presumptively positive in the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at a much less concentrated level than in alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation for a positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positives are cleansed as necessary before confirmation. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug assessment can discern drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Cheating deterrence: It is notably challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Historical usage insight: It supplies a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: There is an approximate 5-7 day delay before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variance: Factors such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test itself evaluates the hair strand, not the hair follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
