Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in New Sheffield, Pennsylvania. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair testing, with centers nationwide that can conduct the test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly used hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation use hair follicle tests due to their longer detection period of up to 90 days, their collected observation process, and their difficulty to falsify. Urine tests remain more accurate for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have increasingly become acknowledged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of ethanol and other narcotics by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. When clipped near the scalp, hair can present up to roughly a 3-month detection period for substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hairs (similar to the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen is suggested. In the absence of scalp hair, a proportional quantity of body hair may be collected. When discussing head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair constitutes all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory assessment of a drug examination involve Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial assimilation of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This procedure includes ensuring the sample was securely sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data logging not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses a preliminary rapid evaluation for substance misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in the majority of specimens, any positive screen necessitates confirmation for acceptability in legal proceedings. Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening mandate an additional confirmation step.

Should a sample be deemed presumptively positive at the Screening stage, further hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening one of the most challenging methods to conduct.

Verification of any positive Screening outcome is accomplished via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples identified as presumptive positive are cleaned before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can demonstrate a pattern of substance use over time, rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent ingestion: Drugs typically take about 5-7 days to become visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair coloration and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outperforms urine testing by delivering superior detection capability. Unlike urine tests, hair samples can reveal a longer drug usage history, providing a reliable analysis of patterns over extended periods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
