Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle assessments in Nicholson, Pennsylvania. If you require a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities in cities nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. We provide analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests, benefiting from a longer detection period of up to 90 days. Collected under observation, these tests are highly cheat-resistant. Despite this, urine tests remain the standard for screening recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective instrument for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The unique structure of hair allows it to capture biomarkers within its fibers, providing a historical account of substance use over a longer span. When follicles are sampled near the scalp, they can offer an approximate 3-month window of detectability for substances like alcohol and drugs. Additionally, hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands, comparable to the width of a #2 pencil, nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the perfect quantity for assessment and verification. For EtG, supplementals, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, it’s advised to collect 150mg. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If hair from the scalp is unobtainable, a similar quantity of body hair is an alternative. When mentioning head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair denotes any other hair form (facial, axillary, etc.).

Workflow Summary

There are four principal phases in the lab processing of a drug analysis: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial introduction of a sample into a laboratory’s systems, confirming the sample’s proper sealing and transport, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing further data input if not supplied by an electronic custody approach.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for substance misuse. Though cost-effective for eliminating drug use in many samples, any positive finding in Screening necessitates ensuing confirmation for legal validity. Samples preliminarily positive in Screening do require additional confirmation.

If Screening suggests positivity, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and set for Extraction. In Extraction, substances are isolated from the hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), highlighting the complexity of hair drug analysis.

A positive screening’s Confirmation is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positives undergo cleansing before confirmation if necessary. The holistic lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair title and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can indicate drug use for periods reaching 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover shorter durations.
  • Hard to manipulate: Deceiving a hair drug test is incredibly challenging, which ensures result accuracy.
  • Shows drug use history: It offers a view of drug use trends over time, not just recent activities.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and personal growth patterns can alter metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although the term "hair follicle tests" is often used, the examination focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle tests to traditional urine tests in Nicholson, PA, the advantages are clear. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
