Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle screening services in Ramey, PA. If a hair drug or alcohol evaluation is required, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in these tests, with locations available countrywide for hair sampling. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body will suffice. Hair screens can examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other specifications.

In the past few years, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle analyses. A growing number of workplaces, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse authorities mandate hair evaluations over the conventional urine screens. Hair follicle screens are preferred by entities with strict anti-drug policies, legal institutions, and for those on probation due to their extended detection capabilities, often reaching up to 90 days, collected via direct supervision, and are almost tamper-proof. Nevertheless, for detection within the previous 5 days, urine analyses remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying substance use, including alcohol. Hair archives a historical record of alcohol and drug intake by immobilizing biomarkers in the structure of the developing hair shaft. When procured near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. This method is easy to collect, relatively tamper-resistant, and straightforward to mail.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hairs (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and validation. For testing EtG, additional substances, or beyond 10-panel tests, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent mass of body hair is acceptable. When head hair is mentioned, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result is divided into four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s database. This process involves checking that the sample was securely sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary and swift evaluation for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive outcome requires validation for legal admissibility. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo further Confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, extra hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than with other methods (for example, urine or oral fluid), making hair testing the most challenging methodology.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are utilized for validating any positive Screening outcome. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing prior to the confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with the accreditation set by ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests are capable of identifying drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more confined detection range.
  • Tamper-resistance: Cheating a hair drug test is nearly impossible, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides usage patterns: It reveals a trajectory of drug use over time, rather than just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires approximately 5-7 days before drugs are traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair characteristics such as color and individual hair growth rates can influence the levels of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is performed on the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Ramey, PA

Hair testing offers Ramey, PA, a more reliable alternative to traditional urine tests by detecting drug use over extended periods. Unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection window, hair tests can offer a greater degree of accuracy and dependability, providing a comprehensive insight into an individual's substance use history.

Employers in Ramey, PA, benefit from hair testing's elongated detection timeline, reducing the scope for manipulation often associated with urine tests. This added layer of security solidifies hair testing as a more dependable choice for robust drug use assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
