Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Rockhill, Pennsylvania. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in providing hair tests, with centers across all cities Nationwide that can conduct these assessments. An individual must generally have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown of the head, though body hair may also suffice. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized substances.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a standard method for drug screening recently. Many employers, legal bodies, and addiction specialists are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is utilized by employers enforcing strict drug policies, courts, and probationers. Hair tests significantly benefit from broader detection windows, spotting drug use up to 90 days, and are managed via an observed collection, making them very difficult to falsify. Nonetheless, for identifying drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests maintain higher accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of these substances by preserving biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair may offer up to a 3-month detection range for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is recommended to use 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample is advised. In cases where scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. The term head hair refers specifically to scalp hair, whereas body hair covers all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial phase of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening serves as an economical method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result needs to be validated to be admissible in court. Samples testing presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

In Instances where a sample yields a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. This stage involves the extraction of drugs from hair at markedly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of hair drug testing.

Any positive Screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptively positive during screening are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It is very challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Records historical data: It provides an overview of drug use patterns over extended periods, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent ingestion: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not on the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
