Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Sadsburyville, Pennsylvania. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair analysis and have facilities nationwide ready for testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other options specifically tailored to your needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the preferred method over conventional urine tests. Employers, the judicial system, and Substance Abuse professionals often choose hair testing. It's ideal for employers with strict drug policies and for probation enforcement. Its advantage lies in a longer detection window, of up to 90 days, with minimal risk of tampering, although for recent drug use detection (within 5 days), urine tests are still more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly perceived as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. By encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of hair as it grows, hair provides a prolonged record of alcohol and drug consumption. A sample taken near the scalp can offer a detection period reaching up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and aids in convenient shipping.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is unobtainable, an equal volume of body hair may be used. The term head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a lab’s system. It includes verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any additional data not provided electronically.

Screening involves an initial swift assessment for drug abuse. While it offers a cost-effective approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result needs a confirmation to be court-admissible. Presumptive positive samples from Screening require another layer of confirmation.

If Screening shows a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for further processing in Extraction. Drugs are isolated from hair at a concentration far lower than in other methodologies, like urine or oral fluid, which is why hair drug testing is particularly challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples showing presumptive positivity are washed before confirmation as necessary. The full lab process, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection duration: Hair drug testing detects drug use over a 90-day period, whereas urine tests provide a shorter detection time.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Historic data provision: It offers a timeline of drug consumption, rather than merely detecting recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days post-ingestion.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur more costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can alter drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although termed as "hair follicle tests", this method examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Sadsburyville, PA In the ongoing comparison between hair and urine drug tests, hair follicle testing excels by offering superior detection accuracy. It provides a comprehensive view, capturing a broader spectrum of substance use over time compared to urine tests, which are limited to recent use.

Unlike urine tests, which can be affected by short-term actions, hair testing resists circumvention. The method's reliability and precision ensure better outcomes for employers needing thorough assessments.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Sadsburyville, PA Hair follicle testing provides a distinct advantage through an extended detection period, encompassing up to 90 days. This broad window grants employers detailed insights into an individual's substance use history, contrasting sharply with the brief scope of urine tests.

This method presents a substantial benefit for ongoing monitoring and assessments, ensuring that patterns of use are comprehensively evaluated.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Sadsburyville, PA Hair follicle tests offer a robust solution to the challenge of sample tampering. This method enhances the credibility of results as it's inherently resistant to the common manipulations urine samples may undergo.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
