Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Seven Valleys, Pennsylvania. Whether you require screening for drugs or alcohol, we excel in hair analysis with testing venues available in every city across the country, equipped to conduct these tests. Hair must generally be 1.5 to 2 inches long, taken from the scalp or body. It can be evaluated for narcotics, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Recently, the trend in drug screening has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle analysis. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for this over the conventional urine analysis. Hair follicle testing is favored by organizations enforcing strict no-drug policies, judicial proceedings, and probation monitoring. Its significant advantage is a detection window of up to 90 days, observed under tight supervision, making it highly cheat-proof. However, for drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine analysis remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture a prolonged record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. It is easy to collect, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

An ideal screening and confirmation require a 1.5-inch section with about 200 strands (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, providing 100mg of hair. For EtG, enhancements, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Use a jeweler’s scale to accurately weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a matching amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory method for analyzing a drug test result comprises four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a lab's workflow. This stage ensures the sample was securely sealed and correctly shipped, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any outstanding data entry tasks absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is inexpensive and rules out drug use in most cases, a confirmed result is necessary for legal purposes. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening demand additional confirmation.

Presumptive positives from Screening result in further hair extraction from the original sample and preparation for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted from hair at a concentration much lower than methods like urine or oral fluid, highlighting hair drug screening as the most challenging method to conduct.

The Confirmation process for any positive screen is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, ensuring more dependable outcomes.
  • Reveals historical usage: It provides a chronological pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the sub-scalp hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
