Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in South Heights, Pennsylvania. If a hair or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair assessments, with facilities available nationwide to conduct them. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is needed. Hair testing can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Several employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse counselors now prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are chosen by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The chief advantage of these tests is their extended detection window of up to 90 days, ensuring a monitored collection that is nearly foolproof. For drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive timeline of drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected adjacent to the scalp, hair can provide a detection window of up to roughly three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easily sent for analysis.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, approximately 200 strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, delivers 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is recommended. It is advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair, while body hair includes all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial intake of a sample into the laboratory’s systems. This phase encompasses confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a rapid initial assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that test positive during Screening demand a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is sourced from the original specimen for Extraction. During this phase, drug compounds are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug testing as one of the most complex methodologies.

Confirming a positive Screening result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. Each step, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are difficult to distort, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal drug use patterns over extended periods, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outperforms traditional urine tests in terms of accuracy and reliability in South Heights, PA. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
