At Accredited Drug Testing, comprehensive hair follicle drug testing is available in Spartansburg, Pennsylvania. For those in need of hair analysis for drugs or alcohol, we are your specialists. Our extensive network of testing centers nationwide, including all major cities, offers this service. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required for these tests, which can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific substances.

In recent developments, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method in contrast to traditional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and substance abuse professionals now frequently opt for a hair drug test. The key advantage is the longer detection period, often extending up to 90 days, and the integrity maintained through an observed collection process, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. For detecting recent usage within five days, however, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug consumption by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When sampled close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to mail.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, containing about 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil), nearest to the scalp, will provide 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to estimate the specimen weight. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key four steps in laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a specimen into a lab’s database. This entails confirming that the specimen was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude substance use for most samples, a positive screening needs confirmation to be valid in court. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require secondary confirmation.

Should a specimen show a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair qualification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, rendering the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It can outline a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth disparities can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair shaft and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
