Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Spring Mount, Pennsylvania. Should you require a hair-based drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing offers specialized services in hair testing, with facilities nationwide capable of conducting such tests. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is typically required. Hair evaluations can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing needs.

In recent years, drug testing methodologies increasingly incorporate hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists now favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is embraced by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and those on probation. A key advantage of hair testing is its extended 90-day drug detection window, collected through an observed process, making it highly resistant to cheating. However, for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. This is due to hair's ability to capture long-term histories of alcohol and other drugs by encasing biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When collected from the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair samples are easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is an optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For additional tests such as EtG, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to other types of hair like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary process of integrating a sample into the laboratory system. This involves checking that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional information not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial check to detect drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation for court validity. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening need a confirmatory test.

If a sample tests positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from the hair at far lesser concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluids, making hair drug screening one of the most challenging techniques.

Confirmation of any positive Screening results is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are washed before confirmation if required. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Reveals historical usage: It offers a record of drug use over a time period, beyond immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent usage: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
