Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Sykesville, Pennsylvania. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is nationwide, with centers available in every city to conduct such tests. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are necessary. Hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for conducting drug tests. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests to standard urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, legal institutions, and people on probation often employ hair follicle drug tests. The primary advantage of this method is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, with samples collected under observation, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, for detecting drug use in the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair fibers as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and verification. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferable. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be collected, an equal quantity of body hair is acceptable. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample enters a laboratory’s system. This step involves verifying the sample's seal and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drug components. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires verification to be legally defensible. Samples with a presumptively positive result in Screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a lower concentration than with alternate techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair testing a challenging methodology.

The Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive status undergo a wash before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Chronological data access: It offers insights into drug use trends over a duration, rather than only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other drug test formats.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is often used mistakenly, as the analysis pertains to the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
