Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Townville, Pennsylvania. Should you require a hair-based analysis for drugs or alcohol, our specialization in this area allows us to conduct hair testing efficiently. Our testing facilities span across every city nationwide. Generally, samples need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head, although body hair may suffice. These tests can screen drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific requirements.

The utilization of hair follicle testing for substance detection has surged in recent times. It's becoming the preferred choice among many employers, judicial authorities, and substance abuse experts over conventional urine tests. Ideal for strict anti-drug workplaces, this method is favored by employers, legal systems, and probationary monitoring. The primary advantage lies in its 90-day detection window and integrity-preserving collection method, which virtually eliminates cheating. However, urine tests still excel in identifying recent drug use within a five-day frame.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Over time, hair absorbs biomarkers into its strands as it grows, providing a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug intake. When gathered near the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug use history for up to three months. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands, equating to the thickness of a #2 pencil and nearest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to determine the specimen's weight. If no scalp hair is present, a comparable volume of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure in the laboratory for processing drug test results encompasses four pivotal phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This phase includes confirming that the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While it is a budget-friendly method for negating drug usage in most samples, to stand in court, a positive result in screening requires confirmation. Samples preliminarily positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be tentatively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at far lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is the most challenging procedure to conduct.

Confirmations of any positive screening outcomes are executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All suspected positive samples undergo cleansing prior to confirmation when necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair tests for drugs can uncover drug use over a 90-day period, in contrast to urine tests which offer a lesser detection timeframe.
  • The challenge in circumvention: Manipulating a hair drug test is remarkably challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Demonstrates historical usage: It outlines a usage trend over time, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent consumption: Drugs are detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often incur more costs compared to alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variance: Elements like hair color and personal growth rate can sway drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", these primarily examine the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
