Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Twilight, Pennsylvania. Specialized in hair and alcohol testing, our centers are available nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required for testing. Our analyses cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized options for hair testing.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly been favored in recent years for their robust detection capabilities. Institutions including employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers rely on hair tests instead of the conventional urine method. The primary advantage of hair testing is its extended drug use detection window—up to 90 days—paired with a near-impossibility for tampering, although urine tests remain superior for detecting recent use within a 5-day timeframe.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair's growing strand. When clipped close to the scalp, it can detect substances up to roughly three months retrospectively. Hair collection is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient for shipment.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the hair sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. When we talk about head hair, we solely mean scalp hair. All other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary) fall under body hair.

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in a lab involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample first enters the laboratory's records. This stage includes ensuring the sample was sealed and sent correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic custody framework.

Screening serves as a rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though economical for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening must be substantiated for court acceptance. Presumptive positives in Screening need further confirmation.

If the initial Screening indicates a presumptive positive, more hair is taken from the primary sample for Extraction. Drugs are then extracted at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other tests (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of positive screen results happens through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples undergo washing as needed before confirmation. The lab process, from start to finish, is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests identify drug usage over 90 days, contrasting with the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: It is exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It reveals drug use tendencies over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot pinpoint recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and individual growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Even though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the underlying follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Choosing hair follicle testing over urine tests in Twilight, PA, provides superior detection and reliability. Hair testing surpasses traditional urine methods by offering a longer detection period, making it difficult to manipulate.

The accuracy rate of hair follicle tests when identifying substance use is impressively high, offering peace of mind to both employers and individuals. In contrast to urine tests, hair analyses are less prone to tampering.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
