Located in Wallaceton, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in detecting both drugs and alcohol, our laboratories are situated in various cities across the nation. Ideal for those with at least 1.5-2 inches of hair, these tests can even be customized to suit specific detection needs.

The trend in drug testing has increasingly leaned towards hair follicle tests. Unlike the typical urine tests, employers, legal entities, and substance abuse counselors prefer hair tests due to their high tolerance and extended detection capacity, capturing drug use up to 90 days. Though urine tests might be optimal for recent drug usage within five days, hair follicle tests boast nearly foolproof integrity and monitored procedures.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical record of alcohol and drug intake due to the entrapment of biomarkers within the strands during hair growth. When procured near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use for about three months. Hair is easy to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, an equal quantity of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the laboratory system. This step includes confirming that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

In Screening, an initial rapid check is conducted for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for courtroom admissibility. Any samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations far lower than those in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus hair drug screening is among the most challenging methodologies to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are used to confirm any positive screening results. All samples with presumed positives are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation in line with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Deceiving a hair drug test is challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It supplies a record of drug use over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detectability in hair takes about 5-7 days for drugs.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
