Accredited Drug Testing offers full-service hair follicle drug assessments in West Decatur, Pennsylvania. When required, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair analysis, with facilities in numerous cities across the country equipped for hair assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is sufficient. These evaluations can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom hair options.

The trend towards drug testing methodologies increasingly includes hair follicle assessments. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over routine urine analysis. Used in stringent no-drug use workplaces, court systems, and by individuals on probation, these tests offer benefits like an extended detection window reaching up to 90 days, with an observation-collected process, reducing tampering risks. Nonetheless, for recent drug use over the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair records a prolonged timeline of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to send.

A segment of 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, the preferred sample size for testing and verification. For EtG testing, additional tests, or tests over 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unobtainable, an equivalent portion of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" strictly pertains to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure to process a drug test involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where the sample is integrated into the lab’s system. This step confirms the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, provides a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entries not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in most samples, though a positive screen requires confirmation before it is legally admissible. Samples appearing positive in Screening must undergo a further confirmation test.

When a sample tests positive initially in the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction step. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluids), highlighting hair drug testing as the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of a preliminary positive result is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample is cleansed before confirmation if required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair Certification and the accreditation adhering to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timespan: Hair tests recognize drug consumption up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with limited detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers past usage patterns: It illustrates a timeline of drug use, unlike recent-use detection.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically involve higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variation: Factors like hair color and individual differences in growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", these tests evaluate the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
