Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in West Hickory, PA. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we specialize in such testing and have centers across all cities nationally to administer it. Generally, hair from the crown of the head or body, with a length of 1.5 to 2 inches, is needed. Hair samples can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a preferred method for drug detection. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often favor it over traditional urine tests. It's the choice of organizations with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation officers. The distinct advantage of this method is its extended detection window, capturing drug use for up to 90 days. The collection process is supervised, making it almost impossible to falsify results. However, for detecting very recent drug use, the urine test remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged account of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers in the strands of the developing hair. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate three-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and is easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches involving around 200 strands of hair (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for analysis and validation. For EtG tests, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The quartet of essential steps in the laboratory handling of a drug testing outcome includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the initial processing of a specimen into a laboratory framework. This stage ensures the sample was securely sealed and shipped correctly, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for illicit drugs. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most specimens, a positive result necessitates confirmation for courtroom acceptability. Any specimens preliminarily positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a specimen appears presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which makes hair drug screening the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation for any positive screened result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed before confirmation when deemed necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and aligns with the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analysis can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which exhibit a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is notably challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus enhancing accuracy.
  • Reveals historical usage: It can illustrate a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just current use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate usage: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis is typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair color and individual diversity in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though often referenced as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
