In Woodland, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, we've got you covered with locations across the nation. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, either from the head or body. This testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other specific needs.

Hair follicle testing has become increasingly popular in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are shifting to hair tests over traditional urine tests. This is because hair tests provide a longer detection period—up to 90 days—are collected under supervision, and are almost impossible to tamper with. However, for recent drug use detection, within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise choice.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has increasingly been regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, offering an extended account of alcohol and drug use. When hair is taken from near the scalp, it can offer up to about a three-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

Procuring a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments with more than 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. We recommend using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's database. This process includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be considered valid in legal proceedings. Samples that presumptively test positive during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

For samples that test presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to administer.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples testing presumptive positive are washed as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes examination according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It typically requires 5-7 days for drugs to be evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are frequently more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Woodland, PA offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. One major advantage is the extended detection period, which can track drug use for up to 90 days compared to the shorter span of urine tests. This allows a comprehensive view of an individual's substance use history.

Moreover, hair testing is far more tamper-resistant than urine testing. This ensures that results are both accurate and reliable, providing peace of mind for employers and agencies implementing drug-free policies. The processes involved also ensure utmost accuracy, transcending the limitations of urine analysis.

Extended Detection Window

In Woodland, PA, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window that captures drug use over a significantly longer duration—up to 90 days. This provides employers an extensive overview of an individual's drug history, which is invaluable for making informed decisions.

The ability to detect substances over a longer period makes hair testing a superior option for employers seeking comprehensive insights. For those concerned about occasional drug use slipping through undetected, hair follicle tests provide the clarity needed to ensure thorough evaluations.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests conducted in Woodland, PA are largely tamper-proof, greatly minimizing the possibility of sample adulteration. Unlike other testing methods, hair tests can show accurate drug use histories without being easily manipulated.

The integrity of hair follicle testing assures employers and agencies of authentic results that can withstand scrutiny. By effectively reducing tampering risks, these tests bolster the confidence in the outcomes, ensuring reliability for all parties involved.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
