In Cumberland Hill, Rhode Island, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. As specialists in this field, we provide hair and alcohol testing services nationwide. Generally, we require between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body for testing. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity in recent times. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer it over traditional urine testing. It's favored by organizations with strict no-drug policies and for probation checks. Its main advantage is a longer detection period, up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it very hard to manipulate. However, for drug use detected within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a longer-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected directly from the scalp, it can offer nearly a 3-month detection window for various substances. Hair sampling is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels beyond 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair may be obtained. Whenever head hair is mentioned, it implies scalp hair specifically. Body hair covers all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s workflow. It involves confirming that the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial, swift assay for substances of abuse. While Screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be court-admissible. Samples with a presumptive positive screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

For samples appearing positive in Screening, additional hair is drawn from the original sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations lower than in other approaches (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug analysis the most challenging methodology.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives are cleansed prior to final confirmation as necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined according to both the standards of CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair and ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal substance use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a more limited timeframe.
  • High resistance to falsification: Hair drug tests are notably resistant to cheating, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Traces historical consumption: It delivers a usage pattern over time rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing methodologies.
  • Inconsistent results: Variables including hair color and individual differences in hair growth can alter drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the assessment is conducted on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle tests to urine tests in Cumberland Hill, RI, the benefits are clear. Hair testing demonstrates superior detection accuracy due to its longer detection window, capturing a more comprehensive substance use history, proving more reliable for entities enforcing zero-tolerance policies.

For those seeking consistent and detailed results in drug testing, hair samples offer a better alternative by significantly reducing inaccuracies present in traditional urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Cumberland Hill, RI, offers an extended detection window that can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike conventional testing methods. This feature provides employers with a broader view of an individual's substance use history.

The long detection period ensures that employers are better equipped to make informed employment decisions, discouraging drug use with ongoing monitoring capabilities.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Cumberland Hill, RI, hair follicle tests present a highly tamper-resistant method that's difficult to manipulate, ensuring the integrity of test results. Unlike other testing forms, the hair sample can't easily be altered or diluted.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
