Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. When a hair-based drug or alcohol test is required, we specialize in hair evaluations, with testing centers available in cities nationwide to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. These assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom hair testing options.

Recently, drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle assessments. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now often favor these over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle evaluations serve those with zero-tolerance drug policies, probation mandates, and court orders. Key advantages include a 90-day drug detection period, secure observed collection, and difficulty in test manipulation. However, urine tests remain most accurate for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers in the strands of hair as it grows, hair provides an extended record of alcohol and narcotic usage. When cut close to the scalp, hair samples can reveal a detection timeline of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests encompassing more than 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be utilized. When we mention head hair, it pertains strictly to scalp hair. Body hair applies to all other hair varieties (such as facial or axillary).

Process Summary

The laboratory process for a drug test outcome incorporates four principal phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This process includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for substances of concern. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug presence in the majority of samples, a positive finding requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening necessitate an additional verification.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, substances are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex technique to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening result is completed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before validation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can ascertain drug usage extending up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection range.
  • Difficulty to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing the reliability of the outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become traceable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are typically pricier compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Fluctuations in outcomes: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair development can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
