In Newport East, Rhode Island, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services. If you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair screening and has facilities across all cities Nationwide for conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body may be used. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the method of choice for substance screening. Employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse specialists often prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine screenings. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by those who enforce strict no-drug policies, oversee probation, or are involved in legal proceedings. Their major advantage is an extended detection window of up to 90 days, with samples collected under observation and resistant to tampering. However, urine tests remain more effective for identifying recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now acknowledged as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended overview of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. When clipped near the scalp, it can reveal up to a roughly 3-month period of alcohol and drug usage. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp equates to 100mg, which is the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional checks, and/or exceeding 10-panel tests, 150mg of the hair sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. In terms of head hair, we only consider scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample into the lab’s system. This process includes ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and sent, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any extra information not recorded by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid detection of drugs. Although Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug presence in most cases, a favorable screening must be validated to be legally defensible. Any samples yielding a presumptive positive during Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

Should a specimen indicate a presumption of positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than found in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The full lab procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that generally have a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating on hair drug tests proves challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical insight: These tests offer a timeline of drug consumption, reflecting usage trends and not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify immediate consumption: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variations: Differences such as hair color and growth rates may influence metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strands rather than the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Newport East, RI, hair follicle testing outshines traditional urine tests due to its enhanced detection capabilities. Hair tests excel in accuracy by revealing drug usage patterns over a broader timeframe, surpassing urine tests that only identify recent consumption. This expansive coverage ensures thorough verification, lending credibility to decisions based on these findings.

Employers benefit significantly from hair testing's capacity to detect drug use history up to three months. Unlike urine tests, which offer a limited window, hair testing provides comprehensive insights, aiding in maintaining stringent drug-free workplace policies. This superiority in detection fosters a healthier, more secure working environment.

Extended Detection Window

Newport East, RI's hair follicle testing offers an extensive detection timeline, spanning up to 90 days. This protracted detection capability gives employers insight into an individual's prolonged drug use history, unlike other tests that only detect recent intake. This broader scope is advantageous for screening applicants or monitoring employees effectively.

With its expansive assessment range, hair follicle testing empowers firms to make informed decisions by understanding the long-term substance use patterns of individuals. This detection window facilitates a more thorough evaluation process, reinforcing workplace safety and integrity through deeper insight into substance habits.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
