Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Canadys, South Carolina. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise in hair testing spans nationwide, with centers in every city capable of conducting tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or other body hair is necessary. This method can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method over traditional tests. Many organizations, courts, and substance abuse experts now favor hair tests instead of urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation services utilize this method for its extended detection window of up to 90 days. Although urine tests are still best for recent drug use in the last 5 days, hair tests are harder to tamper with.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol intake. Hair offers a durable timeline for alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within its growing fibers. When cut close to the scalp, hair can provide up to about a 3-month detection timeframe for substances. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to mail.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or over 10-panel tests, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a corresponding quantity of body hair can be gathered. When we mention head hair, it refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample in a lab’s system. This comprises confirming the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid test for substance abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive result will need verification to be court-admissible. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent verification.

If a sample is tentatively positive at the Screening level, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are separated from hair at considerably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any Screening-positive findings is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples considered presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The entire lab operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection time.
  • Challenges in evasion: Evading a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot indicate immediate use: It necessitates roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can alter the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Canadys, SC, hair follicle testing is increasingly preferred over urine tests. This choice stems from the superior detection accuracy of hair tests, capable of identifying substance use over an extensive period. The reliability of hair tests underscores their advantage, making them indispensable for employers committed to workplace integrity.

The traditional urine test, while useful for recent detection, lacks the historical insight hair tests offer. Employers in Canadys prioritize comprehensive screening, understanding that hair tests provide a clear view of sustained substance abuse patterns, which is crucial for maintaining productivity and safety.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Canadys, SC, offers an extended detection window, tracing substance use back up to 90 days. This comprehensive perspective aids employers in assessing the long-term habits of employees or candidates, ensuring a thorough review of substance history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
