Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Cassatt, South Carolina. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair testing, with facilities in every city across the Nation to conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body hair can be used. Hair tests allow analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become part of standard drug testing practices. Numerous employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary programs rely on hair follicle drug tests. A major advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended drug detection time, showing drug use up to 90 days, with samples collected in an observed process, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant measure for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a historical record of alcohol and other substance use by capturing biological markers in the strands of the hair as it grows. When taken close to the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol intake for up to a nearly three-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of approximately 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional evaluations, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to collect 150mg of the sample. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, the equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary procedures involved in the lab analysis of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This step includes confirming that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, designating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplemental data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening offers an economical method to dismiss drug usage for most samples, any positive result must be confirmed to be acceptable in judicial settings. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a presumptive positive result arises during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and made ready for Extraction. During this procedure, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging method to execute.

Validation of any positive screening outcome is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive outcomes are cleansed before validation as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which provide a shorter detection time.
  • Challenges cheating: The difficulty in deceiving a hair drug test results in more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of substance use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though often labeled "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually assesses the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Cassatt, SC lies in its superior detection capabilities. Hair testing offers a longer window of detection, effectively identifying substance use that urine tests may miss. This makes it a preferred choice for rigorous screening needs, providing a reliable measure of ongoing drug usage patterns.

Hair testing surpasses traditional urine tests in terms of accuracy and reliability, ensuring employers can maintain a safe and compliant workplace. This robust testing format offers stronger safeguards against manipulation, proving its worth in high-stakes testing scenarios.

Extended Detection Window

In Cassatt, SC, one of the standout features of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window. While typical tests cover a short span, hair tests can uncover drug use over a period lasting up to 90 days. This broad timespan offers employers a comprehensive view of an individual's substance use history.

With a longer detection period, those in Cassatt gain insights about months of usage, instead of days, providing an opportunity to make informed decisions based on consistent substance use patterns, rather than isolated incidents.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests are a tamper-resistant method of drug screening available in Cassatt, SC, significantly reducing the likelihood of sample alteration. This testing form is robust against most adulteration tricks that could affect other test types, ensuring highly reliable results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
