Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Hartsville, South Carolina. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise is in hair testing, with centers available in cities across the nation to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are sufficient. Hair tests can be used to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

Recently, there has been an increased use of the hair follicle drug test in drug testing procedures. Many employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists now opt for this over the standard urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, legal authorities, and parole officers. The main advantage of hair follicle tests is the extended detection period of drug use, which is typically up to 90 days, as it's observed during collection and is difficult to falsify. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. By embedding biomarkers in the hair strand's fibers, hair offers a comprehensive review of alcohol and drug consumption. Hair gathered near the scalp can reveal usage data for up to roughly three months. Its collection is straightforward, modification is challenging, and shipment is convenient.

Collecting a 1.5-inch sample of about 200 hair strands (approximately as thick as a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, ideal for initial screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's suggested to weigh this sample on a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about initially processing a sample into the lab's workflow. This step checks that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, allocates a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any further data entry not captured by electronic chain of custody systems.

Screening provides an initial rapid analysis for substance abuse. It is a cost-efficient strategy for excluding drug use in the majority of samples; however, to use a positive result in court, confirmation is necessary. Any samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If the Screening indicates a potential positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction, wherein drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid). This makes hair drug testing one of the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation of a positive screen is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing a presumptive positive are washed before confirmation where necessary. The complete lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes evaluation under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and maintains ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Testing integrity: Cheating is quite challenging with hair drug tests, enhancing result reliability.
  • Supplies historical data: It facilitates a contextual review of drug habits over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection: Detecting drugs in hair takes roughly 5-7 days following use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests cost more generally compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal hair growth variation can impact drug metabolites' concentration within hair.

Note: While frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the evaluation focuses on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
