Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Cayce, South Carolina. For those in need of an alcohol or drug test via hair, we specialize in these tests and have facilities throughout the nation capable of hair testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, either from the head or body. Hair samples can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing needs.

Recently, the preference for drug testing methods has shifted towards hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now favor these tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair tests are particularly useful for employers enforcing strict drug policies, courts, and those on probation. Their main advantage is a prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, conducted in a monitored setting, making results nearly tamper-proof. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use within a recent 5-day window, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair acts as a long-term record for alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within its strands as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer an approximately 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. This method is not only straightforward to collect but also challenging to tamper with and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (roughly comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, perfect for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be sourced. By head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other variations (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the lab analysis of a drug test involve Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing within the lab’s system, ensuring proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry outside an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary examination for substances of abuse. Although Screening effectively rules out drug use in most cases at a lower cost, a positive result must be confirmed for legal standing. Samples yielding presumptive positives from Screening require secondary verification.

For specimens showing presumptive positives in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and prepared for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations significantly lower compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, marking hair testing as the most intricate screening method.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive from the screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are notoriously difficult to manipulate, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Historical data provision: These tests present a usage pattern over time rather than capturing only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection is limited: Drugs typically appear in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing commonly incurs higher costs than other methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentration in hair may be influenced by hair color and individual growth variability.

Note: Despite common terminology as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
