Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Chesterfield, South Carolina. Seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol evaluation? Our expertise in hair testing includes nationwide facilities capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is necessary for analysis, covering drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly relied on hair follicle tests. Businesses, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now often prefer hair testing over typical urine tests. Hair tests, valued by those enforcing zero drug tolerance, probationary checks, or court directives, spotlight a broader detection window—often up to 90 days—performed under scrutiny and nearly impervious to manipulation. Nonetheless, for recent drug use within 5 days, urinalysis remains the definitive choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now acknowledged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol involvement. It provides an extended-history record of substance intake by encasing biomarkers within the hair strand's evolving fibers. Hair, when clipped near the scalp, can represent a detection window of up to 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and it ships conveniently.

To acquire an optimal sample, a 1.5-inch portion consisting of about 200 strands (equal in thickness to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp is needed, equating to 100mg—the perfect amount for both screening and validation. For EtG, extra checks, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Use a jeweler's scale for accurate measurement. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a corresponding quantity of body hair can be utilized. Here, head hair exclusively signifies scalp hair, while body hair includes all other varieties (facial, auxiliary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for a drug test result includes four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial sample logging into a laboratory’s framework. This stage ensures the sample's seal and correct shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any missing data not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs an initial cursory inspection for illicit substances. Though cost-efficient for ruling out drug presence in numerous samples, positive screens require confirmation before legal admissibility. Presumptively positive samples necessitate additional verification.

Should a sample be ostensibly positive in Screening, extra hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. This involves obtaining drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid) and is why hair drug testing is notably complex.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are appropriately cleaned before confirmation. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed per the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine evaluations, which have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulation of a hair drug evaluation is notably difficult, ensuring result accuracy.
  • Historical usage insight: Offers a consumption pattern over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: Approximately 5-7 days are required for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are usually pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth differences can influence metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although occasionally termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
