Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Cross Anchor, South Carolina. If you're seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol examination, our expertise lies in hair evaluations, with testing facilities established in all major cities nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is ideal. Such tests can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized hair screening options.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent as a method of drug examination. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests in place of traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers enforcing zero-drug-use policies, the legal system, and individuals under probation. Their primary advantage is detecting drug consumption over an extended period, typically up to 90 days, collected during an observed procedure, making it nearly foolproof. However, for drug use detection within the last five days, urine assays remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a lengthy record of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained close to the scalp, hair offers an up to 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is easy, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample length of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the circumference of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the primary processing of a specimen into a laboratory’s system. This step includes verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial detection effort for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation step.

If a sample is presumptively positive at the Screening phase, more hair is separated from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Any presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair assignment and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection duration: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection span.
  • High tamper resistance: Cheating a hair drug test is significantly challenging, resulting in more reliable results.
  • Historical tracking: This test provides an account of drug usage over time, not just recent incidents.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become discernible in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the evaluation examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When considering drug testing methods in Cross Anchor, SC, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over urine analyses. Superior detection accuracy allows for identifying substance use over a broader time frame. Unlike urine tests, hair assessments provide more reliable and comprehensive insights.
Hair testing is less invasive and eliminates the risk of tampered samples, bolstering its effectiveness as a trustworthy testing choice.

Employers seeking consistency and reliability favor hair testing to maintain high standards of workplace safety. Its broader detection windows mean employers can enforce zero-tolerance policies more effectively, ensuring compliance across all levels of their organizations.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
