Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Dentsville, South Carolina. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we at Accredited Drug Testing are hair testing experts, with centers nationwide that can conduct a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your scalp or body will be required. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing services.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become part of drug testing protocols, replacing the traditional urine tests for many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals. These tests are favored by companies with zero-tolerance policies on drug use, courts, and probation officers. The main advantage of hair follicle drug tests lies in their extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making them nearly impossible to tamper with. However, when it comes to screening drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture a prolonged history of alcohol and certain drugs by retaining biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When procured near the scalp, hair offers nearly a 3-month detection range for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's best to use a jeweler's scale for measuring the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encapsulates all other types (facial, axillary, and so forth).

Process Overview

The major steps in processing a drug test in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the primary handling of a sample in a lab’s package. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any leftover data entry omitted from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary quick-check for substance misuse. While it's economical for eliminating drug use across most samples, a positive result needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Any possibly positive results in Screening require a follow-up verification.

If Screening findings are tentatively positive, further hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair in much lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), which makes hair drug screening notably challenging.

The Confirmation for any positive screen test is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Every presumed positive specimen is cleansed before confirmation if needed. The complete lab process—from Accessioning to Confirmation—is inspected following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, leading to more dependable results.
  • Historical insight: It offers insights into drug use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to trace recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to alternative drug testing strategies.
  • Variable outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Dentsville, SC can be attributed to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. While traditional urine tests might miss long-term drug use, hair testing uncovers a far broader history. It can identify drug use up to 90 days back, offering employers an in-depth understanding of a person’s substance usage history. This extended window enables organizations to make informed decisions based on more comprehensive data than what's possible with other methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
