Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing in Dutch Fork, South Carolina. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol via hair, we specialize in this method and offer testing centers across numerous cities nationwide where hair tests can be performed. The ideal hair length should be 1.5 to 2 inches from the hair on your crown, though body hair may sometimes be used. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity in drug testing protocols. Increasingly, employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts favor these over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers who strictly prohibit drug usage, judicial institutions, and those on probation. Their main advantage is a longer detection window of up to 90 days, with supervised collection that's nearly impossible to tamper with. Yet, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair traps biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand, providing a long-term record of alcohol and drug use. When collected from close to the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is difficult, and shipping is convenient.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (roughly resembling a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, it's advised to collect 150mg of the specimen. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be collected. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial entry of a sample into a lab’s system. This phase involves ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient means to rule out drug usage on most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples preliminarily identified as positive during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result in the Screening process, more hair is withdrawn from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that show presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated in line with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation standards of ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It is notably challenging to evade a hair drug test, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapability to detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days before becoming detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites present in the hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the test actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
