In Garden City, South Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. For individuals requiring hair drug or alcohol assessments, our specialty lies in hair testing, with centers nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or the body may be used. Hair analysis includes drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Over recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly shifted towards hair follicle testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests appeal to employers with zero-tolerance policies and are used by courts and probation programs. These tests boast a detection duration of up to 90 days, collected through an observed process and are very difficult to tamper with. Nevertheless, urine tests remain superior for detecting very recent drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination is increasingly recognized as a potent instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by retaining biomarkers within the fibers of its developing strands. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and convenient to dispatch.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides around 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The process within the laboratory for a drug test result comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the primary step of processing a sample into the lab's system, ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as an initial swift assessment for drug usage. Although it effectively rules out drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples tentatively positive in Screening need a further confirmation.

If Screening suggests positivity, additional hair is obtained from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair in lower concentrations compared to techniques like urine or oral fluid checks, making hair drug screening the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples marked presumptively positive undergo washing prior to confirmation. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can unveil drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is exceedingly hard to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Reveals historical usage: It can display a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inc inability to detect recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become apparent in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Results variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often named "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Garden City, SC, hair follicle testing has clear advantages over urine tests. While urine tests have been a traditional choice, hair testing offers superior detection accuracy and reliability, covering a longer history of substance use and providing comprehensive insights.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
