Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol screening, we excel in hair testing and maintain facilities in numerous cities across the Country where hair testing can be conducted. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inch hair from the head or body can be utilized. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or include tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become an increasingly popular method for screening drug use. It's often preferred by employers, the judicial system, and professionals dealing with substance abuse over typical urine tests. Those implementing no-drug policies and monitoring probation turn to hair follicle testing. They offer prolonged detection for up to 90 days, witnessed collection, and are exceedingly difficult to tamper with. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has been recognized as an effective method for tracking drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline by preserving biomarkers within the fibers of the developing strand. By gathering hair near the scalp, it can offer up to an estimated 3-month detection duration for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is effortless to acquire, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for analysis and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. Referring to head hair implies scalp hair exclusively while body hair encompasses other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test outcome consists of four core stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample within the laboratory's framework. This encompasses ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of misuse. While Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires Confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples preliminarily positive during Screening necessitate a further validation process.

If a sample is preliminarily positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples rated as preliminary positive are cleansed before Confirmation when necessary. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Evading a hair drug test is very complex, hence enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Delivers historical data: Offers a drug use pattern over time, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It normally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair pigmentation and individual disparities in hair growth can modulate the concentration of drug substances in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
