Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Gloverville, South Carolina. When in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing provides hair testing expertise and boasts testing centers Nationwide, capable of executing hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head crown or body is necessary. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or include other custom options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method of screening for drugs. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are increasingly opting for hair drug tests rather than conventional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probationers utilize hair follicle tests. Key advantages include a longer drug usage detection window, usually up to 90 days, an observed sample collection process, and being nearly tamper-proof. Nonetheless, for screening recent drug use, within 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures markers of substance use within the strands as they grow, providing an extended timeline for detection. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about three months for various substances. It is simple to collect, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient to deliver for analysis.

A sample consisting of a 1.5-inch portion of approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) from close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmatory tests. For tests including EtG, add-ons, or exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If there is no scalp hair available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. Note, 'head hair' refers solely to scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The key phases in laboratory drug test processing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into the laboratory's workflow. This step checks the integrity of the sample's seal and shipping process, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to rule out drug consumption for most samples, a positive Screening result requires confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are removed from hair at much lower concentrations than other testing techniques (like urine or oral fluid testing), which makes hair drug analysis one of the more challenging methodologies.

To confirm any positive result from Screening, tests such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are used. All samples showing presumptive positives are washed before confirmation, if required. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings detect drug use over 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • High resistance to tampering: Tampering with a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Provides usage trends: Offers insights into drug usage patterns over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Not useful for recent consumption: Drugs need 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Higher costs: Generally, hair drug screenings are pricier than other methods of drug testing.
  • Inconsistent results: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the testing is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicles beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing In Gloverville, SC, the advantages of hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests are evident. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
