Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Grover, South Carolina. Specializing in this area, we have centers nationwide capable of conducting hair drug or alcohol tests across various locations. For most cases, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. This method allows for analyses of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction as a more favored approach. It is increasingly required by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals instead of traditional urine screenings. This type of test supports zero-tolerance policies, legal requirements, and probation checks, offering a superior detection window of up to 90 days. Conducted under supervision, it's nearly impossible to alter results, though urine tests still prevail for drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective measure for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the strands, hair offers a historical record of alcohol and drug use. A sample taken near the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol use over a period of up to 90 days. The collection process is straightforward, with minimal risk of tampering, and shipping is convenient.

A 1.5-inch sample, around 200 strands (roughly the thickness of a standard pencil), is needed to gather 100mg of hair, an optimal quantity for tests. For tests such as EtG, and those above 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is advisable for specimen measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain only to scalp hair while body hair encompasses all other variations (face, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug tests encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning begins with entering a sample into a lab’s system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes data entry not handled by an electronic custody system.

Screening serves as an initial swift check for drugs. Though cost-efficient for excluding drug use in numerous samples, positive screens require confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples that test positive in Screening need further confirmation.

For samples testing positive in Screening, additional hair is used for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at lower concentrations than methods such as urine or saliva testing, making hair testing particularly challenging.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation when necessary. The full process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen as per the CAP (College of American Pathologists) and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use over a 90-day range, unlike urine tests with narrower windows.
  • Immunity to manipulation: Hair testing is hard to deceive, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insights: Offers a timeline of drug use rather than just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks detection for recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Generally costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and growth variations may influence drug metabolite concentration.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
