In Hopkins, South Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you require a hair or alcohol test, we specialize in these procedures and have centers across all U.S. cities equipped to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. Testing options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair test solutions.

The trend toward drug testing increasingly employs hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists often prefer these over conventional urine tests. Employers with strict drug-use policies, judicial systems, and probation officers use hair tests. Their main advantage is a detection span of up to 90 days, with minimal chance of tampering. For drug use within the last five days, however, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a valuable method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a historical record extending over months by embedding biomarkers within the fibers as the hair grows. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug use for a period of up to around three months. The collection process for hair is straightforward, making it challenging to falsify, and it is simple to mail.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) provides 100mg, which is the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or those over 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, an equal portion of body hair can be used as an alternative. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to hair from the scalp. Body hair includes all other types of hair (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for analyzing a drug test result consists of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the laboratory’s system. This stage ensures that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and carries out any outstanding data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial assessment for prohibited substances. Screening is a cost-effective means to eliminate drug usage in most samples, yet a positive result requires verification to be valid in a legal context. Samples that test positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive in the Screening process, additional hair is gathered from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair in significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing particularly challenging.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is utilized to confirm any positive results from screening. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage over a span of up to 90 days, contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Tracks historical usage: It provides a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Detection in hair takes approximately 5-7 days post drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Variables like hair color and individual growth patterns can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
