Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Jacksonboro, South Carolina. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol via hair samples, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled. We have numerous testing locations across the country, where hair of approximately 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is utilized for analysis. The tests can cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence in the realm of drug testing. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer it over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by organizations with strict no-drug policies and legal entities supervising probationary conditions. The hair test's key advantage is its extended detection range of up to 90 days, with the additional benefits of a supervised collection process and its resilience against tampering. For recent drug consumption within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers in the strands as they grow, providing a prolonged record of substance use. When gathered near the scalp, it offers roughly a 90-day detection period for drugs and alcohol. Hair is easy to collect, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the preferred sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing is recommended. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four principal phases in the laboratory drug test analysis: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system, involving the verification of proper sealing and shipping, random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) assignment, and completing additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial rapid evaluation for substance abuse. It serves as a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples. However, any positive result in Screening requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples presumed positive during Screening need a secondary verification.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive in Screening, extra hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation for positive screens is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, any presumptive positive samples are washed as needed. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection range: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter range.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Chronological data: It offers a history of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Cost implications: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
