Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing in Mountville, South Carolina. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair screening, with testing facilities in every city nationwide ready to conduct a hair test. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the scalp or body is typically necessary. Hair testing analyzes drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom options.

Lately, drug testing methods increasingly feature hair follicle testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer a hair drug test over the traditional urine test. Hair tests are favored by employers with no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers. The main advantage of hair tests is their extensive 90-day detection window, collected under observation, making it nearly foolproof. However, for drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures extended histories of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can present a detection span of nearly three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is hassle-free, hard to adulterate, and straightforward to mail.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) near the scalp yields 100mg, ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Specimens should be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not present, a corresponding quantity of body hair could be used. "Head hair" strictly refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" covers all other hair types (e.g., facial, underarm).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory workflow encompasses four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step where a sample enters the laboratory's framework. This step checks if the sample is adequately sealed and shipped, allocates a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and involves any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening is an initial, rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. Though it is a cost-efficient method to negate drug use in most samples, a positive screening needs validation to be usable in court. Presumptive positive samples from Screening require a secondary verification.

If Screening suggests positivity, additional hair is drawn from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In this step, the drug concentration extracted from hair is lower compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing a challenging methodology to perform.

Verification of positive screening outputs is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo necessary washing before confirmation. Every part of the lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair program and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: It identifies drug use up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests with shorter detection windows.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are tough to cheat, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical overview: It demonstrates drug consumption patterns over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection is unfeasible: Drugs require about 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Cost: Typically, hair drug tests are costlier compared to other methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Even though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
