In Richburg, South Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you require, we're here to help. Our expertise is in hair testing, with centers across all cities nationwide. For effectiveness, samples should come from the crown of your head or body with 1.5 to 2 inches of hair. These tests can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

The shift towards hair follicle drug testing has grown recently. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists favor this method over traditional urine tests. Hair drug tests are ideal for employers with stringent no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. Their major advantage lies in a prolonged detection span of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and tamper-proof. However, if detecting drug use within the past five days is crucial, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective measure for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair conserves a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug presence by embedding markers within the strands as they grow. When procuring samples close to the scalp, hair can reflect a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drug use. Hair collection is easy, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 strands of hair (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp yields 100mg, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional requisites, and/or tests beyond 10-panel, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all remaining hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps in processing a drug test in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of entering a sample into the lab's system, ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing extra data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drug use. While Screening efficiently excludes drug usage in most cases, a positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Any presumptively positive samples during Screening demand further confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation of any screening positive is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Before confirmation, all presumptive positives undergo washing if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is thoroughly evaluated as per CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accredited in line with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: The difficulty of altering hair drug tests ensures more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides usage history: It can depict a pattern of drug usage over time, not only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days post drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other methods.
  • Results variance: Factors such as hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", they actually assess the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Choosing hair follicle testing over traditional urine testing in Richburg, SC, presents clear advantages. Hair tests offer superior detection capabilities, unearthing substance use instances more accurately. Compared to urine tests, they not only detect a broader range of drugs but also maintain reliability over extended periods, thereby making them a preferred choice for discerning employers.

The significant edge hair testing has over urine testing lies in its extended detection window. While urine tests capture a snapshot, hair tests weave a comprehensive picture of drug use, ensuring effective monitoring and increased public safety. This accuracy is pivotal for employers aiming for rigorous safety standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
