Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug screening services in Ruffin, South Carolina. If a hair or alcohol test is required, our expertise in hair assessments is backed by a network of centers across all U.S. locations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be tested. Our analyses detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

In recent times, the implementation of drug tests has increasingly involved hair follicle testing. Employers, judicial systems, and experts in Substance Abuse are opting for hair assessments over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, legal systems, and probation clients favor this method for its extended detection, precise collection, and resistance to tampering. Nonetheless, for detecting substance use within a recent 5-day period, urine tests remain unparalleled in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant means to identify substance use involving drugs and alcohol. The hair retains a chronicle of substance usage by embedding biomarkers within its strands during growth. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use within an approximate 3-month timeframe. Collecting hair is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of roughly 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from the scalp is needed to yield 100mg, the preferred quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair specifically indicate scalp hair only, whereas body hair encompasses all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The process for laboratory analysis of a drug test comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning phase entails the initial intake of a sample into the lab's system. This includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, creating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional required data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary evaluation for drug abuse. Though Screening serves as a cost-efficient method for excluding drug use in the majority of cases, a positive outcome at this stage requires further confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples with a presumptively positive result in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are taken from hair at much lower concentrations compared to alternate methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening exceptionally challenging to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening result occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenge to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is considerably difficult, leading to more dependable results.
  • Depicts drug use history: It offers an overview of drug use patterns over time, not just recent application.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
