Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in South Congaree, South Carolina. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in such testing, with facilities available nationwide, including in every city, to carry out hair testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the head or body for testing purposes. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized to meet other testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a prevalent method for conducting drug screenings. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, probation authorities, and courts frequently utilize hair follicle tests due to their primary advantage: an extended detection window for drug use, typically up to 90 days. This method involves observed collection and is meticulously difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day timeframe.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When trimmed near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of nearly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, resists tampering, and is simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample size of 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the specimen. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be acquired. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of a drug test result in the lab encompasses four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any requisite data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While a cost-effective means to exclude drug use in most samples, a Screening positive necessitates confirmation for courtroom acceptance. Any samples with preliminary positive results in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If indicated as positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs at significantly lower concentrations from hair compared to other ways (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening uniquely challenging.

Confirmation of a positive Screening outcome occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before Confirmation as required. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests detect drug activity for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair drug tests are challenging to cheat, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Demonstrates usage patterns: They reveal drug usage trends over time, beyond recent activity alone.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth rates can alter the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite often being labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination pertains to the hair stand itself, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
