In Williams, South Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers a full-service hair follicle drug testing solution. Our specialties include conducting hair and alcohol tests at numerous centers in various cities across the nation. Ensuring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body meets most testing needs. With options in drug, alcohol/ETG, or specialized hair analyses.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prominent as a favored method over time. It is preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, shifting from standard urine tests to hair analysis. Such tests are crucial for zero-tolerance workplaces, legal obligations, and probation checks. Its advantage is a 90-day detection window, coupled with a nearly cheat-proof, observed collection. Yet for drug detection within a 5-day period, urine tests still lead in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. It offers a prolonged timeline of substance use by securing biomarkers within the hair fiber as it grows. When samples are taken near the scalp, they can provide insight into drug and alcohol use for up to roughly three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 strands of hair (similar size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is advisable. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be acquired. 'Head hair' specifically indicates scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses all other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially entering a sample into the lab's system. This phase ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigns it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for identifying drugs of abuse. This stage offers a cost-effective method to exclude drug presence in most samples; however, a court-acceptable positive requires confirmation. Any samples with a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

When Screening suggests a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this stage, drug extraction occurs at significantly lower concentrations than in other forms like urine or oral fluid, underlining the complexity of hair drug testing.

Any positive result in Screening undergoes Confirmation via techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, complies with CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests trace drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter span.
  • Hard to falsify: The results of a hair drug test are more reliable, given the difficulty in cheating.
  • Offers historical insight: It can map out drug use patterns over an extended timeframe, rather than recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs only become traceable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: The test, often termed a "hair follicle test", actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing is Superior: In Williams, SC, hair follicle tests surpass traditional urine tests due to their significantly extended detection window and difficulty to manipulate. While urine tests serve immediate detection needs, hair testing unveils a more comprehensive history of substance use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
