When you're searching for hair drug testing near me or hair drug testing locations, we provide a simple and convenient process to find a drug and alcohol testing location near you that is certified to provide all of your drug and alcohol testing needs.
Hair testing is now recognized as an effective technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can yield an alcohol and drug detection window of up to about 3 months. Hair is easy to collect, not easy to tamper with, and convenient to transport.
A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 strands of hair (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will generate 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. When testing for EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to obtain 150mg of the specimen. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).
Process Overview
The lab processes a drug test result in four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning refers to the initial processing of a sample within a laboratory system. This process involves making sure the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient means to rule out drug use in most samples, a screen with a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.
When a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and set up for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other testing approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to conduct.
Confirmation of positive Screening findings is accomplished via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.
