Located in Wilmot, South Dakota, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug screening services. Should you require a hair or alcohol test, we specialize in hair analysis and provide numerous testing centers across the US. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are needed for analysis. Various drug, alcohol/ETG, or custom tests are available through our hair testing services.

Recently, there has been an uptick in utilizing hair follicle drug tests in drug testing methods. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and professionals dealing with substance abuse now favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests, which are conducted under supervision, boast a 90-day drug detection window and are challenging to manipulate. However, urine screening remains most precise for identifying recent (past 5 days) substance use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now considered an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline for detecting substance usage by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When sampled close to the scalp, hair can show evidence of drug and alcohol presence for up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, comprised of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for screening and verification. If EtG, additional tests, or tests beyond 10 panels are required, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. The term "head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing in the laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. Although it's cost-effective for ruling out substance use in most samples, a positive Screen result needs verification for court admissibility. Presumptive positive samples in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

If Screening yields a presumptive positive, additional hair from the initial sample is set aside for Extraction. This phase involves obtaining drugs from hair at lower concentrations than alternative methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair analysis the most challenging screening technique.

Verification of any positive Screen outcome is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before verification if necessary. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the complete laboratory procedure is scrutinized according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, leading to more accurate outcomes.
  • Shows usage history: It can track a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolites concentration in the hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not on the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle and urine testing in Wilmot, SD, hair tests stand out for their unmatched detection capabilities. They offer greater accuracy and reliability, detecting drug use over a more extended period. Urine tests, while common, fall short in detecting a long-term history of substance use, which makes hair testing a superior choice for thorough screening processes.

Extended Detection Window

In Wilmot, SD, the hair follicle testing method provides an extended detection window, identifying drug use from up to 90 days ago. This prolonged period allows employers to gain comprehensive insights into the substance history of employees or prospective hires. Such an extended window offers more reliable data in maintaining a drug-free workplace environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Wilmot, SD, is renowned for its tamper-resistant qualities. Unlike other testing methods, the hair test is significantly less susceptible to sample adulteration, ensuring that the results remain trustworthy and beyond question. This method provides clear and reliable outcomes which are valuable for maintaining organizational integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
