In Herreid, South Dakota, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair testing, our centers nationwide, including all cities, offer these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other parts of the body are required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom testing options.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly been used for drug testing in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer them over regular urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationers use hair tests due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days, observed collection process, and resistance to tampering. However, urine tests are more precise for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Accredited Drug Testing

Utilizing hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a long-standing record of drugs and alcohol by embedding biomarkers within its strand as it grows. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol presence for a period of roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising approximately 200 strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's thickness), taken nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for initial testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to use 150mg of the specimen. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result consists of four crucial phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial treatment of a sample within a laboratory’s system, which involves confirming that the sample was adequately sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry lacking from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive outcome requires verification to be valid in a legal context. Samples yielding positive indications in Screening demand subsequential confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch and set up for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly reduced levels than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains the complexity in executing hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any affirmative screening findings is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive screen undergo washing pre-confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, thus enhancing the result's precision.
  • Tracks past usage: It can illustrate a timeline of drug consumption across an interval, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to track recent usage: A gap of roughly 5-7 days is requisite for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses typically incur more cost than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Attributes such as hair color and personal discrepancies in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug residues in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
